Like seafarers of the past, long before Scotland’s roads were built, we’ll be exploring the intricate Hebridean coastline both by sea and on foot. This is a superb and unique wilderness adventure and travel experience! We will be island hopping and visiting remote communities as well as cruising into some out of the way fjord-like sea lochs along the coast. Accessing remote locations by sea allows for some fantastic walking in diverse and wild landscapes with excellent opportunities for spotting a wide variety of wildlife – from seabirds such as gannets and guillemots to otters, dolphins, wales and seals.
Feel the wind in your hair, hike along white sandy beaches, swim in turquoise blue coves, take in the sounds and clean air of remote nature, enjoy a camp fire in good company and unwind.
The elegant Brigantine sailship ‘Lady of Avenel’ is your home during your sailing and walking holiday. She offers accommodation for 12 guests in 6 comfortable twin berth cabins below deck with 2 toilet/ shower rooms and 1 separate WC on deck. The spacious, bright and cosy saloon is built above deck with good views to the outside, perfect to enjoy a quiet hour, social evenings and delicious dinners.
You’ll be looked after by a welcoming crew of experienced sailors, our on board cook and your knowledgeable walking guide.

On arrival in Oban Harbour in the early afternoon you’ll be welcomed on board with a first cup of tea and your adventure starts. We’ll raise the anchor and sail across the Firth of Lorn to the southern shores of the Isle of Mull to a scenicv anchorage for the night.

The settlement of Lochbuie sits in a beautiful bay and enjoys one of the most stunning locations on Mull. Easy walking lets us takes us along a forested shoreline with wonderful views to the mainland, we visit a tiny church with history, the grand and still inhabited laid’s house, a medieval castle, a mausoleum and even a prehistoric stone circle – all backed by beautiful scenery.
In the afternoon it is all hands on deck and a sail through the Sound of Mull flanked by rolling green hills of the island on the left and the rugged cliffs of Morvern on the right. We anchor in the sea loch Sunart for the night.

This morning our crew will take us onto land on the shores of Loch Sunart and we’ll endeavour a wild hike across the hills along an old drovers trail until we reach one of Scotland’s most glorious beaches. Here, we will be picked up again for late afternoon tea on the boat or maybe watch the sun go down on land.

A brief sail this morning takes us to the second largest of the ‘Small Isles’, Eigg with its tiny community, interesting history and stunning setting. We explore the nearby hillsides and discover early Christian monuments, caves, chruches and ruins, hear about Vikings, Clans and lairds, of struggles, defeats and successes! After tea and delicious cake in the cafe and a visit to the excellent craft shop we return to the ship with more stories than we could have imagined for such a small island. We make the short sail to anchor near the Isle of Muck and if time permits, take an evening amble on a very different Small Isle. For those in favour of a more serious hike, there are options such as the rocky outcrop of An Sgurr or the cliffs of Beinn Bhuidhe.

After breakfast we set sail for a longer journey heading south once more passing the Sound of Mull for a visit in Morvern. We enjoy an afternoon hike from Lochaline to the medieval castle ruin at Ardtornish pint and the impressive cliffs of Inninmore Bay.

A short sail this morning heading southwest to delgihtful Kerrera which boasts pretty green pasture, rugged cliffs with an impressive castle ruin atop. A wonderful circular hike with panoramic views marks the final day of your sailing and walking holiday. This evening, we celebrate our adventures with a special dinner on board our Lady of Avenel.

Following breakfast we enjoy a short sail to Oban and it is farewell! Travel on from Oban by train to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Our groups on this trip are of a personable size of no more than 12 persons and accompanied throughout by an experienced and knowledgeable guide who will do her/ his best to make your time with us in Scotland interesting, enjoyable and comfortable.
Level of fitness
The hiking on this trip is of an easier nature and designed for people with a good general level of fitness and mobility. We hike on good trails but also on some rough, rocky and uneven paths. You should be sure footed, have good balance and be used to regularly walking on unpaved tracks. You may like to consider bringing some walking poles. Our itinerary lists distances/ times for each day. If you are unsure, please contact us and we are happy to discuss any issues.
